I’ve caught the sewing bug and I don’t want to be cured.
This little gem was a Christmas present from Dave’s mom.
My list of elaborate projects so far:
1. Draft stopper (aka a tube full of rice).
2. 3 pillows!
Okay, those weren’t elaborate. But I am learning. And pinteresting possible projects to try like the sewing fiend I know am.
Quilting I know nothing about, but I want to do it. Is that more for sew masters than beginners?
These pillows are part of our master bedroom bedding overhaul. This is the third time I’ve changed my mind in 7 months. We live in a customer service driven world now, folks. Where Pottery Barn and West Elm let me return a totally used duvet I bought in July.
Andddd we rearranged our living room after taking the tree down. Anyone else always do that? My husband was itching for it. (Can I just say I love that he loves thinking about furniture arrangements?)
Please comment possible beginners sew projects/shower me with general words of praise and encouragement for making it this far in my sew endeavors. Just kidding. But really though you could…

Hi Rach
I’ve tried quilting but what I really love is crotchet! I have so many projects pinned I will need to live till I’m 99 (at least) to get them all done – or should I say started cos isn’t that what crafters do? We must have half a dozen things in he o at once.
Pinterest – love it for ideas of colour and patterns.
Enjoy your quilting
Elizabeth
So true! Haha, thanks.
Hi Rachel! Just ‘found’ you via food peeping on Pinterest, heehee. LOVE your blog & recipes. I am happy to see a young person bitten by the sewing bug, it is a humble art and so very necessary, at least I feel it is. I’ve been sewing since I was little, about 50 yrs now. I sew clothing for me, for dolls, make pillows, quilts and whatever else catches my eye.
I made my first quilt when I was about your age, from a pattern in a vintage magazine I found in a thrift store. The pattern was simple, called Amish Sunshine & Shadows, like this one here: http://www.amishcountrylanes.com/Pages/hs2698.shtml Mine didn’t turn out ‘perfect’ in the sense that all the blocks were square, or my colors were ‘right’, the quilting always in the ditch. But, to me, that was OK. In my eyes it was terrific, I’d made a quilt!
I learned early on that if you try to do ‘perfect’ you won’t have much fun in any thing you’re trying to accomplish in life. I have signed up for your emails, can’t wait to see what you make next! If you have any questions about sewing ask away, I’ll do my best to answer in a timely way.

Thanks so much for writing! I may take you up on that.
I can’t wait to see what you create! You can definitely quilt… it takes a lot of time and patience, but go slowly, you’ll figure it out.

Thank you!
I found a really great tutorial on Pinterest for a knockoff Anthropologie “Cirrus” duvet cover that has been easy (though time consuming) to put together. It was waaaaaay cheaper than purchasing the real thing, plus I got to make it in the exact dark grey color I wanted.
I’ve had a machine for years, but I only use it often enough to still classify myself as a “beginner”. I’ve found the biggest challenge is convincing myself that I should try sewing projects even when they seem intimidating (see duvet cover, above!!)
Good idea. Thanks for writing!
I want to start sewing!! I know you are a beginner, but can you recommend a machine for someone who never used one? Darn Pinterest, darn you to heck!! It makes you want to do all the crafting I thought was lame back in my teenage years!! Even my teenagers want to try some of the things they see on there!! :-D
I use the Singer traditional and have had no problems with it so far. :)
Cool Beans!! Thanks!!
congrats on the sewing machine! I got my first this Christmas from my grandmother. My first project to tackle is curtains for our master bedroom…should be pretty easy, right?
How cool! Yes, I’ve heard curtains are a great beginner project a well.
