REFURBISHING A HAMMERED COPPER TRASH CAN

May 14, 2013

This is the story of one man’s journey transitioning from bachelor-hood into married life. Also, the Pistons had a downright terrible season and need to pay for their crimes against athletics!

We’ve covered a lot of ground on projects for the living room. There’s still much to do in here, but only one thing stood in the way of us and the end of what I’d consider “phase one.”

I wanted this trash can gone! Well, not gone – but changed. I planned to used wallpaper or contact paper to cover the exterior, until I happened along the Rustoleum Metallic Paint & Primer in One spray paint. Envisioning a new shiny, metallic texture introduced into the room had me convinced. Where my real struggle came was choosing the right finish. I hoped copper would be great, but I could not get over how orange-y the bottle appeared.

I hummed and hawed over the decision, until I was so ready to stop looking at Pistons memorabilia all day, I had to pull the (spray can) trigger and go for it. After a quick sanding, we did three sets of three thin coats, crossed our fingers, and let the can dry overnight. But before we were even drying, I knew I was in love. The copper is so perfectly not-orange, but still bold in a not-trying-too-hard way.

David was pretty smitten with the new one, which is good because although he wasn’t emotionally attached to his old trash can, I still wanted him to like the final product since it was his original belonging. And he did! We both do! And it’s looks so right back in its spot.

Let’s remember where the living room was, and where it has already come in three months of living here.
