CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

February 19, 2015

Visiting Charleston was the last day of our trip and we were resisting being worn out travelers with a little one. Maybe that is why the city did not quite sweep me away like Savannah did. It can nonetheless give you more of that historic, romantic vibe. (Also it was cold! So that was working against my experience too. And all the bar-goers for Mardi Gras were killing the vibe for me.) First, the best thing we experienced in the city – Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts. It is a little family tradition of ours to get doughnuts while on vacation. Something about coming home with a half dozen doughnuts for breakfast is really fun, indulgent, and vacation-y.

CHARLESTON from Rachel Schultz

Mac & Murphy is a sweet little stationary shop downtown. We are tossing around the idea of ordering this print for our Valentine’s gift to one another.

There is a really rad shop for dudes called Indigo & Cotton. It was a did not buy anything, but could have bought everything situation.

In my research for our trip, so many people raved about Hominy Grill. Sadly, it was a flop for me. Did I order wrong? Was this a fluke?

That is it for our journey around the lowcountry. We are so glad to have gone and so glad to be back. The 21 hours in a tiny car was an accomplishment! And no gator attacks!

I found your blog while googling images of our doughnuts (I’m the head baker at Glazed). I’m so happy you liked our doughnut hole truffles! That was a pretty crazy couple of days for us!
And I’ve been to Hominy three times now. Yup, always just kind of meh. I agree that is all too common among the “classic” places here in town. I second the above recommendation for Butcher and Bee though!

So fun! We loved them. Thanks Stephany.

I’ve been to Charleston on gloriously beautiful days, But Savannah is still one of my absolutely favorite cities in the whole world. I love the beautiful squares, and try to walk them all whenever I get to go. I always feel as though I could be a great artist or author if I lived there. It inspires me.

Totally same! Savannah might be my top 5 ever.

Sadly, you’re not wrong about Hominy being a flop! A lot of the raved about places downtown are tourist/college kid traps with ok-but-not-great food. Some of the newer establishments are really where its at! Butcher and Bee and Husk are worth it when you’re here next time. Charleston is a wonderful place but definitely better when it isn’t freezing outside! P.S. I live here… but I like Savannah better, too.

Thanks Karissa! Wish I had talked to you sooner!
