In the Fall we did the big job of trimming down the enormous and untamed bushes in our front yard. That piece of the job ended up taking a whole day, so we decided to wait until Spring to remove the remaining roots and stumps.
Having the huge bushes gone was an improvement, but the stumps and dirt patches still look scrappy. Our neighbors have really nice yards, so we have been the weakest link.
We removed one stump using a car and a tow strap, but for the rest we did it the old fashioned way with shovels and axes. David says he thinks that was actually faster.
David’s parents helped us with everything and his mom is kind of a weeding and landscaping machine.
Weeds coming back over and over is really annoying, but like I said, David’s mom knows her stuff and she says she uses a product called Preen. It has something to do with spreading crystals across the dirt and then watering them. Apparently it makes weeds not come back, although it does sound a bit like Jack and The Beanstalk. I will try it.
(And oh yes, you may be noticing that our door is not red anymore. I primed it to prepare for trying another color – maybe this burgundy, maybe an army green.)
Our yard feels so much clearer! And now with the shrubbery gone, I think our apple tree will thrive. Our next task is it remedy the remaining dirt patches. We will consider planting seed, but may just take the faster route and spring for sod.
