FINDING LIGHT FIXTURES WITH CHARACTER FOR EIGHT FOOT CEILINGS

March 20, 2017

With our recent lighting spree, the reoccurring and biggest challenge was those silly eight foot ceilings. I LIKE PRETTY LIGHTING and this standard height ceiling and the reality of tall people are a little limiting.

The only place in our house I can have a cool big chandelier with some drop to it is over our dining table and I was not looking for a new fixture there right now. After some diligence we came up with pieces for our master bedroom and family room that have a big impact while still not dropping below 12 or so inches.

Like in our daughter’s room, we did two custom fixtures through an etsy shop called Lucent Lightshop (who I adore). For the living room, since I couldn’t go low, I wanted something wide to let the fixture have a visual footprint that was still pretty big to fit the scale of this room.

I like the different feels this piece can have if I move the bulbs straight out or straight down. Right now I’m positioning them with some variety because I like the sculptural vibe. I can’t wait to add a ceiling medallion too.

In the master bedroom we were able to go a little lower than the 12 inches or less rule we went by elsewhere. Since it is over the bed, people don’t have to be able to walk under it, but we still did not want it too low because that is obnoxious when fluffing the covers during bed making. And even with people not having to walk under, it just wouldn’t look right with the proportions of the room to have it too low.

Designing this one, I was inspired by a vintage fixture I had seen. I love it so much and we have hooked it up on a dimmer switch which is really nice for bedrooms. Because whatever hangs above your bed should be something you like looking at since you spend a lot of time staring at it while falling asleep. All the bulbs on this one glow beautifully at night and it is the next best thing to looking at the stars. It kind of gives me the same feeling actually. From the comfort of my soft bed and climate controlled room.

On we continue with new lighting! So many rooms, but these few we have done recently are about it for now.
