$30 Wall Mounted Nightstand

October 9, 2017

With having lots of furniture I wanted to fit into our nursery plus guest room, one way I thought to keep things a bit clearer was by creating a wall mounted nightstand. To do it, we used simple corbels from the hardware store! It was inexpensive, easy, and completely customizable. I considered doing two small nightstands on both sides of the bed (each with just one corbel), but decided the flow of the room would be better with one large nightstand in the middle of the bed and crib. I feel a full bed doesn’t have to have nightstands on both sides.

Also what does it say about me that I tend to make up wifi passwords that are food related?

We began by sanding a 20 x 10 inch piece of poplar wood, rounding the top edges and taking special care to make the cut side of the wood very smooth. Having everything ultra sanded is I think the most important part for making the finished piece look polished and not raw, scrap wood-ish. Equally as inexpensively as this, you could do one of these unfinished wood plaques from the craft store for the tabletop.

Then we brushed on three coats of ralph lauren’s “chalk white” in semi gloss. That is the same color as the walls. Although the walls are eggshell, for a table surface we wanted at least semi gloss sheen.

Using screws, we attached the corbels to the tabletop. Then after finding the right height for our bed (usually about level with the top of the mattress), we used drywall anchors to mount the nightstand to the wall.

These are the corbels I found at home depot. They were $11 each.

I think it looks so neat with the board and batten details that help this room be less blank box like it was before.

Nightstand styling is one of the most fun decorating exercises to do. Especially in a guest room where it doesn’t have to be super practical. On my everyday nightstand I always have utilitarian things like eye drops and all that. Just pretty things in here! Although I do love a little decorative dish for form and function.
