PAINTING A RED-ORANGE BENCH

April 14, 2013

There’s a tall person problem I didn’t know about until I married my 6’3″ husband. It’s really hard to put on your shoes without sitting. (At least, I assume it’s being tall that creates this problem. Now I’m wondering if it’s just David thing).

Regardless, we needed a stool or bench by the door to prevent having to pull a dining room chair over every time Dave laced up to leave the house. Meanwhile, I am big on not wearing shoes inside. With our small apartment entryway, that means no shoes beyond the invisible 4-5 foot line. Dave puts his shoes on in the chair, but can’t walk back to put the chair back. Is this silly? A little. But Dave’s mom was to the rescue with a bench she found on the side of the road? A yard sale? Wherever it is she finds these gems.

I wanted the bench to be super glossy with a color that is equal parts red and orange. David gets credit for picking the winner. (Paint swatches stress me out!) It’s Glidden’s Red Geranium:

It has more orange than your computer screen probably lets on. My mom and I patched up nail holes and general beat up-ness with wood filler.

We sanded, dusted, and rolled on two coats of paint. After letting it dry overnight, we used wipe on polyurethane to get it even more glossy.

This is his current home. Plus, a sneak peek of our freshly painted (!) walls. The full reveal of that is coming later this week.

My husband and I moved into a VERY similar apartment in August 2013. Your bathroom mirror is shockingly similar and I’ve had such a hard time making our bathroom warm and cozy. I’ve basically avoided tackling the project until I saw your work! The yellow glow and bare, large mirror give me nightmares. I’m going to try the framing this week. Oddly enough, my husband’s name is Dave as well! He also pulls out a dining table chair every morning and I find myself pushing it back into place everyday. We just had a good laugh from your post. Looking forward to more updates and projects from you both!

    Rachel,
I was having such a bad day and found your blog. You have such great style, I have fallen in love with this site! It’s so great to see a young woman with her head on straight and focus set on God.
Keep up the great work, I’ll be back!
