I spent the past few days driving to a small village in Illinois where my mother-in-law, Dinah, grew up. I know what you’re thinking – and yes, I rode with my mother-in-law without my husband in a car for a collective 16 hours. And I liked it!

Dinah grew up and got married here and her mom still lives here too. The whole village only has 650 residents! I loved having a grocery store we could walk to and being able to look any direction and see miles of farmland. It’s one of those places that reminds you of a simpler time, like how we listened to baseball on the radio and everyone knows everyone.

Our main purpose there was a baby shower for David’s cousin, but we also did many special things like visiting David’s grandpa’s gravesite and the church where Dinah & Randy were married. Also, I ate way too much delicious food and watched lots and lots of Cardinals and Tigers baseball.

This is the guest of honor himself, baby Leopold! If he’s my husband’s cousin’s son – what does that make my relation to him? Cousin-in-law-once-removed? What a cute one he is.

We also went to a chicken farm and bought eggs for $1 a dozen! Dave hopes to one day raise chickens, so this may be a glimpse into my own future. They were pretty scared of me at first, but by the time they were leaving they were getting crazy close. Like, I-was-scared-of-them-now close.

Maybe my very favorite part of everything was seeing so many special, old photos around Grandma’s house. Not the least of which is this one of David at 15, looking Holister-tastic. Plus camo shorts! Ha!

  • I also have some family in southern Illinois–West Frankfurt, Benton, Marion, Carterville, and Herrin. It’s always fun to go visit! Just discovered your blog via Cup of a Jo and wanted to tell you how much I’m enjoying it. You have at least one (but I’m sure many many more) follower.
