USA Flag Children’s Craft

July 4, 2022

Our beautiful flag! There are many occasions this could be used. Memorial Day, the Olympics, studying American History, and of course celebrating Independence Day on THE FOURTH OF JULY. It feels like peak summer. We do less art in the summer months, but even with all the playing outside and less structure, my children never do not jump for it when I offer art time.

Consider adding an art project for children to your homemaking plans for a holiday! It gives a nice layer to celebrating.

I like doing the colonial flag sometimes, and it is great for a project such as this. I wrote out several American phrases or quotes for artists to choose from. Some ideas are: Home of the Brave, In God We Trust, God Bless America, or the below quotes or lyric from “America the Beautiful.”

America, America may God thy gold refine
‘Til all success be nobleness
And every gain divined

“Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for the governing of any other.” – John Adams

“Christianity is the immortal seed of freedom of the world.” Alexandre Vinet

For the youngest children I write the text for them. Slightly older, I write it in pencil and they trace. Older yet write on their own in print or cursive.

MATERIALS

  1. red, white, and blue paper
  2. white paint
  3. paint brush
  4. scissors
  5. glue stick
  6. black colored pencil

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Cut a white paper rectangle and glue it to the center of a blue sheet of paper.
  2. Cut small white rectangles, red strips, and even smaller blue rectangles for the flags.
  3. Glue together flags. I made twelve small flags for a 8 x 10 page.
  4. Glue flags around white rectangle on big piece of blue paper.
  5. Copy quote about America into white rectangle. (I included ideas above). Youngest children may need it written for them, slightly older can trace a pencil writing, and even older children can write on their own in print or cursive.
  6. Paint small dots or stars on blue portion of flags.
