THE STAIR FINIAL

January 5, 2016

At first, I waffled on keeping the finial on top of our stair newel. If I am already dropping some stair lingo you do not know, fear not because I have included a diagram.

It is not the worst finial I have seen, but I decided it was dating things too much to stay. We fiddled around with it to see how it was attached. There was some kind of contraption involving a dowel and two nails.

With a hammer and some of my brute strength, I freed it from its newel captor. That left a hole like this.

That is better!

I plan to paint the spindles and probably part of the newel white, but not this top part part. That meant we had the task of filling the hole and making it look like wood. We cut the dowel off the finial and were going to glue it into the hole, but it fit so snugly, no glue was even needed.

Next, using some (stainable!) spackle, we filled in the hole. That had to cure for a good long time. The packaging recommended 2-8 hours, but we went ahead and waited a full day.

I sanded. I stained. I like the stairs better now. It clears the area visually. With the horrible carpet still there, everything feels a little like lipstick on a pig. It is a process, you know.

Hi, how did you fiddle with it to get it to the point that you could tell it was held in place with two nails and a dowel? I’m about to take on a similar project but I’m just not sure how to start without damaging the dowel as I’m trying to loosen and eventually remove the existing finial. Thanks!

We kind of just started fiddling with it as you said. I believe rocking it back and forth and kind of peeking what was down in there.

I’m trying to find an old finial for an antique staircase.
